Here you can view the currently envisioned projects for the Basilica CSA rebate.
The 2025 rebate is currently at $5.160.43 plus $0 in generated interest.
There was an additional $71,854.04 rolled forward from last year's campaign.
In early 2025, Pensacola experienced an unprecedented snowfall of almost 8 inches at the Basilica. The weight of this put extraordinary stress on the gutter and drainage system. These copper fixtures were reinforced, and three leaks were repaired. This was a great opportunity for us to reinforce the roofing and proactively care for the Basilica’s iconic copper roofing on all three buildings.
Many sections of our Basilica campus are in the dark at night. It was decided to add attractive sidewalk lighting to the Chase Street side of the Basilica Community Center and replace our current lampposts between the rectory and church with new fixtures, and add a lamppost to the front lawn with two new fixtures on either side of the rectory front door. To add to the historic feel of the setting, the antique-style fixtures will be lit with gas.
None of the new locks will apply to our historic wooden doors. However, the doors to the parish hall, sacristy, and rectory, as well as the two external gates to the perimeter fence, will be refurbished with electronic, magnetic locks. Currently, if the gates are locked and one does not have a key, there is no way to exit the property. Exit buttons will be installed to ensure that anyone can exit as needed.
Needless to say, restoring our wooden pews is a major undertaking. Brief consideration was given to replacing them altogether. However, given their historic significance and value, restoration of the pews is the path we will take. The cost above is an estimate as negotiations with the craftsmen and contractors are still ongoing.
The Basilica exterior was vandalized last year. Currently, there is no camera coverage on the front of the church or rectory. Members of the Parish Council recently attended a workshop put on by national and local law enforcement addressing security at places of worship. The parish is awaiting the results of a professional security assessment by law enforcement officials in order to assess the security needs of the campus.
The recent engineering survey on our bell tower (see the 2023 CSA Page) revealed that the cradle or housing, and undergirding support of our lone bell, "Michael," is in need of repair and restoration. As you can see from the photo to the left, much of the metal structure is supported by wood and has corroded significantly. The bell does not swing and is sounded by the use of a striker.
A section of 10 pews at a time will be restored.
