Today we were informed of the death of Michael McCracken. This comes as devastating news for the Basilica parish. Michael has been associated with the Basilica since 2013. His dedication to the liturgy and music was unparalleled!
Most probably do not know that he was also dedicated to keeping the grounds of the Basilica immaculate: weeding the gardens, maintaining an herb garden in the back of the rectory, and making sure that the Basilica looked pristine! To put it into one sentence: Mike’s heart, soul, voice, musical talent, gardening skills, and life were dedicated to the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel.
Right before Christmas last year, 2025, he approached me, and we had a serious conversation regarding his replacement. Michael initiated the conversation. He told me that he knew that his health condition was declining. To be honest, I did not want to hear this – not because I was cold-hearted, but because I did not want to lose Michael McCraken as our Music Director – he was just TOO GOOD to be replaced. He lifted up my soul to the Lord with his music, his singing, and his personality.
Again, in January, he approached me and said again that we have to get serious about his replacement. His main concern: he felt that he was being negligent to the people of St. Michael’s if we did not get a replacement to ensure that the liturgy, music, and people of the Basilica were being served! We discussed the process of how to do this; we discussed a couple of possible replacements. My problem: who can possibly replace Michael McCracken!!!
Advance seven months: Fr. Raymond is announced as the new Rector/Pastor. I discussed this issue with him. He spoke with Michael, and they agreed to advertise for a replacement. Fr. Raymond did this – WITH MICHAEL’S PERMISSION and AGREEMENT!!! No one, except for God, knew that Michael’s death would be so quick.
Michael and I argued over another important issue: his funeral arrangements. He was insistent that he wanted ABSOLUTELY NO FUNERAL SERVICES. We argued over this twice, but in his own way he insisted upon this! I want to respect his wishes. To do anything contrary would be to be disrespectful of Michael McCracken. BUT I would like to have a Memorial Mass for him in the near future. I will discuss this with Fr. Raymond.
Let us keep Michael McCracken in our prayers.
Blessings,
Msgr. Bosso
