“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19
Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation and the beginning of our life in Christ. Through the waters of Baptism, we are freed from sin, reborn as children of God, incorporated into Christ and His Church, and given the gift of new life in the Holy Spirit.
The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel is honored to accompany parents as they prepare to have their child baptized and welcomed into the Catholic Church. In presenting a child for Baptism, parents are also making a commitment to raise their child in the Catholic faith, to teach them to know and love Jesus Christ, and to make the practice of the faith a regular part of family life.
How Do I Begin?
Parents wishing to have their child baptized should begin by contacting the parish office. Our parish staff will help you through the process and provide the necessary information regarding preparation and scheduling.
Generally, the process includes:
If you are not currently registered at the Basilica, or if you live outside the parish, please do not let that keep you from contacting us. Our staff can help you determine what may be needed in your particular circumstances.
Choosing Godparents
Godparents have an important spiritual responsibility. Their role is much more than honorary; they are called to be witnesses of the Catholic faith and to help the parents lead the baptized child toward a mature Christian life.
According to the law of the Church, a Catholic godparent ordinarily must be at least sixteen years old, have received Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist, and live a life consistent with the Catholic faith and the responsibility they are undertaking.
We Look Forward to Welcoming Your Child
The Baptism of a child is a joyful moment not only for the family but for the entire Church. Your child is becoming part of something far greater than any one family or parish: the Body of Christ.
We look forward to helping your family prepare for this beautiful Sacrament and welcoming your child into the life of Christ and His Church.
