“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19

Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation and the beginning of our life in Christ. Through the waters of Baptism, we are freed from sin, reborn as children of God, incorporated into Christ and His Church, and given the gift of new life in the Holy Spirit.

The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel is honored to accompany parents as they prepare to have their child baptized and welcomed into the Catholic Church. In presenting a child for Baptism, parents are also making a commitment to raise their child in the Catholic faith, to teach them to know and love Jesus Christ, and to make the practice of the faith a regular part of family life.

How Do I Begin?

Parents wishing to have their child baptized should begin by contacting the parish office. Our parish staff will help you through the process and provide the necessary information regarding preparation and scheduling.

Generally, the process includes:

1. Contacting the parish office to request Baptism and provide basic information about your child and family.
2. Completing the Baptism registration paperwork provided by the parish.
3. Participating in Baptismal preparation, if required, so that parents can better understand the Sacrament and the promises they will make on behalf of their child.
4. Choosing godparents who are prepared to assist you in raising your child in the Catholic faith. At least one godparent must be a practicing Catholic who meets the requirements established by the Catholic Church.
5. Scheduling the Baptism with the parish after the necessary preparation and documentation have been completed.

Choosing Godparents

Godparents have an important spiritual responsibility. Their role is much more than honorary; they are called to be witnesses of the Catholic faith and to help the parents lead the baptized child toward a mature Christian life.

According to the law of the Church, a Catholic godparent ordinarily must be at least sixteen years old, have received Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist, and live a life consistent with the Catholic faith and the responsibility they are undertaking.

• A baptized non-Catholic Christian may participate alongside a Catholic godparent as a Christian witness.
